The numerous lagoons and estuaries along the South African coast provide some challenging salt-water fly fishing opportunities. The most commonly caught fish in these waters are Shad or Elf (known as Blue Fish in America), Garrick or Leervis and Skip Jack (known as Ladyfish in America) a member of the Tarpon family.

The majority of these fish are caught at the hottest time of the year (November - April), either from a boat or wading in the estuaries.

In the subtropical waters of Zululand a wider range of fish can be encountered requiring a greater amount of skills. Surf casting in the wind can be very difficult for the novice fly fisherman. If you fish from a boat, a variety of tackle busting game-fish may be encountered, including Barracuda, Bonito, small Tuna, Spanish-mackerel, Queenfish and some giant Kingfish. For the more adventurous, you can try your hand for marlin and sailfish.

Once again the hotter the weather the better the fishing is likely to be. The local fishermen recommend all the months ending with an r.
